Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) issued a statement regarding student participation in the National School Walkout on March 14th. Gwinnett responded with its typical punish and pushout stance. You can read our response here. Some students are hesitant to participate in the walkout for fear of being overly punished.
That’s where parents and adults come in. Please call the superintendent’s office (678-301-6010) or email (Alvin_Wilbanks@Gwinnett.k12.ga.us) to let him know that you support an adjustment to the bell schedule so students can engage in this important civics lesson without fear of retribution or missing classroom instruction.
Once you have done that repeat for the school board members. The email address for members is MySchoolBoard@gwinnett.k12.ga.us. Follow the link http://bit.ly/GCPSPhone to get your board member’s phone number. Also call board chairman, Carole C. Boyce at (770) 995-6796. GCPS allows students to miss portions of class to collect money for Relay for Life and various pep rallies. Students now have an opportunity to have an experiential civics lesson at school.
Let Gwinnett schools know you support student voice!
